I’m very happy to announce my new ‘Formidable Women’ print! I’ve painted these portraits onto Farrow and Ball paint chips over the last three years and there are now thirty six of them, so I’ve given them a paint chart all of their own.

These portraits are the quietest work I do, where I reach my absolute upper limit of concentration. I always start with a plan, and a mood suggested by the colour, but as the painting takes shape there’s a limit to the control I have over the person I’m painting. Because of the tiny scale, the slightest brush mark can change an expression or a whole personality. They seem to have a power of their own. I’ve learnt to go with this and just see what happens. Every time it’s exciting.

I have a box in my studio labelled ‘Formidable!’ (exclamation mark included!) and I’ve been keeping the portraits in there. Recently I tried putting some of them together to see how they would look, and they just leapt up from the page. Colour clashes, personality clashes, unexpected connections, friendship, harmony, electric combinations - there was just so much going on. So this had to become the Formidable Women paint chart. It doesn’t follow the usual paint chart logic - the colours are not in any kind of sequence and some appear twice - but that’s ok as I’m pretty sure I ripped up that rule book long ago! The portraits are exactly the same size on the print as they are in real life (2cm x 3cm) and the print quality is amazing - you can see every pin prick speck. It’s printed onto beautiful 100% cotton, museum-grade paper and the total size is 30cm x 40cm, so it fits into a standard size frame. If you’re in the US this print will fit happily into a readymade 12” x 16” frame. Here it is hanging happily between The Reds and The Greens…

The prints are posted in a sturdy tube and they’re wrapped with a flourish, so they’ve very gift-ready if you’re sending to a friend. Each print is signed and dated and embossed, and accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity and a text about the project. Any questions just drop me a line!
