“Absolutely beautiful work. Quirky, imaginative, detailed and clearly created with love”

Welcome to The Collection! Over the last four years I have been completely absorbed in painting miniatures onto paint chips. This is the ultimate collection of 132 of those paintings on glorious Farrow & Ball colours, brought together onto one colour card and transformed into a jaw-droppingly beautiful print.

Miniature paintings by Rachel Spelling on a Farrow and Ball colour card

This is a sister piece to the very first colour card I painted in lockdown back in 2020 and all the paintings are different. I toyed with the idea of calling this one The Sequel but chose not to, because sequels are almost always terrible! I’ve taken it up a notch with this collection, and the paintings enter a whole new level of detail - testing and pushing right to the brink what can be done with a flat block of colour, a 3:2 ratio and and a really small space. Over time, this work has become an outlet for all of my thoughts and ideas, one that I’m so grateful for and can’t imagine living without. In a chaotic world, it helps restore a sense of order and peace.

I’ve included many of the key paintings from the Originals sales - The Dawn, The Long Drive, The Stamp, The Big Screen, The Stars, The Sign, The Early Morning and The End are all here, and there are a lot that nobody has ever seen before. I set about making this piece last Summer and spent many happy weeks working on fifty two brand new paintings, to make it sing as one complete piece. There’s an evolving grammar to this work that I’m learning as I go and I find it fascinating. The paintings need to sit together with their own rhythm and tempo, and they bring a set of rules. Some need to function as punctuation and are very simple, almost blank, like a small pause for breath. Others need to lead the eye along (a flowing ribbon or a horizon line) and then there are the heroines (sorry gentlemen, I hardly ever seem to paint a hero) and the landscapes, where the eye can rest and the imagination can wander. In between all of that, making this work is just heaven. It’s about enjoying to the max what can be suggested with a tiny amount of paint, what a colour can stand for and how fluidly that can shift and, best of all, it opens up an avalanche of ideas - as many ideas as there are colours in the world. It allows for a playful, uninhibited way of working which I think I’ve been looking for my whole life! This is what makes it so addictive and enjoyable and explains why I haven’t looked up from my paintbrush for the last four years.

The Collection is printed onto beautiful 308gsm museum-grade paper and the colours and detail level are just amazing. It’s signed and embossed and accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity. I ship worldwide and process all the orders myself from my studio in South East London, so you can always get in touch with me directly to check on an order.

Here is The Collection proudly hanging in my kitchen in a simple oak frame and accompanied by two cats who have been actively involved in many stages of its creation.

Framing tip: I’ve just discovered that this custom-made 6mm brushed gold frame looks amazing with both of my paint chart prints. If you’re in the UK it can be ordered online from www.eframe.co.uk . For this print size (30cm x 100cm) it costs about £55. It looks luxe but it’s quiet, and sits back to let the paintings do all the talking. For more framing tips I’ve also written a blog post which you can read here.
